Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Great Basin CESU: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Wyoming-Montana Water Science Center (WY-MT WSC) is offering a funding opportunity to a Cooperative Ecosystems Studies Unit (CESU) partner for research to support the development of multi-temporal snowpack extent monitoring techniques in the northwest United States. Snowpack extent in the months of March through July has been shown to be a primary indicator of headwater stream intermittency in the Rocky Mountains. Because of the typically remote nature of headwater streams in the Rocky Mountains, the most logical way to quantify spatially-distributed snowpack extent characteristics is with remote sensing methods. Despite the utility of remote sensing methods, collecting and analyzing high-resolution (e.g. 30-meter) satellite data at a regional level requires high-level computing and can be extremely time-consuming. Recent advances in cloud-based data processing, such as those provided in the Google Earth Engine environment, have the potential to increase the spatial and temporal extent of the study, enabling investigators to more efficiently evaluate the relation between snowpack extent and stream permanence across a greater geographic extent and over a longer period of time.
