Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Great Lakes Northern Forests CESU: US Geological Survey is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU Partner for research in Chronic Wasting Disease modeling. Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is fatal, neurodegenerative of cervids. This disease is of major management concern for state and federal wildlife agencies as the disease continues to increase and spread across North America¿s cervid herds. Preventing the introduction and spread of CWD into new regions is the most effective management strategy to protect cervid herd health, and managers need tools to help guide management efforts aimed at this prevention. This opportunity will specifically target the development an integrated mathematical and statistical framework that incorporates animal movement information to forecast the spread of CWD from new foci and provide recommendations for the location of the application of disease control efforts to maximize likelihood of success. Additionally, this opportunity will focus on investigating quantitative models to assess the relative contribution of direct and indirect transmission to the CWD disease processes, which will help direct management actions at the most significant disease drivers. Lastly, this opportunity will also address other wildlife disease modeling needs as they arise.
