Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, North Atlantic Coast CESU: Beach Scraping is a commonly employed storm damage reduction technique used by communities within the boundaries of Fire Island National Seashore to transfer sand from the foreshore of the subaerial beach to the back beach to create an artificial dune or enhance the primary dune. In addition, several communities within the boundaries of the Seashore regularly nourish their beaches. Little research has been done to evaluate the effectiveness of these methods for storm damage reduction and none has been done to determine the long-term affect on dune evolution and sand storage. This project will evaluate the affect of beach scraping as a mitigant for erosion, assess the impact of beach scraping and nourishment on the dune-beach system by analyzing historical changes, and assess the affect of beach scraping on nearshore processes
