Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Rocky Mountain CESU: The U.S. Geological Survey, Geospatial Information Office through the National Geospatial Program Office is seeking assistance in building the National Spatial Data Infrastructure. Through this announcement this project will explore the integration of Montana geographic names into the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) and will utilize GNIS as a business process and GIS application within the Montana Wildland Fire Base Map. This project also includes the establishment of the GNIS as a formal framework layer for the state of Montana, develops support for this layer with a recognized Working Group and recommends the processes and procedures necessary to update and maintain geographic names data in Montana. Evaluation Criteria: Successful completion of this project will include the following components and deliverables. 1) Provider must determine and propose the establishment of a formal GNIS Data Steward and Working Group for GNIS updates and maintenance to the Montana Land Information Advisory Council. 2) Deliver an action plan to establish GNIS as a formal framework data layer for the State of Montana so it will (a) have the same stature as other framework layers in Montana, (b) be formally recognized as a part of the business process of the state, and (c) have access to funding to support GNIS updates and maintenance. 3) Identify differences between the Montana names data and the GNIS dataset for Montana by performing dataset comparisons to existing framework datasets in Montana. 4) Represent the interests of the user community concerned with GNIS in the Montana by providing the USGS with the most widely accepted representation of names for physical and cultural features. 5) Propose the most efficient and proficient institutional process / structure for integrating, updating and maintaining Montana names data within the GNIS. 6) Demonstrate the utilization of the GNIS within the Montana Wildland Fire Base Map application as a statewide GIS application and business process and incorporate GNIS as the source of text-based geographic searches within the Montana Wildland Fire Base Map web mapping application. 7) Propose a process to provide the USGS with GNIS updates through the GNIS Working Group and the State Names Authority in Montana. 8) A Work Plan for the accomplishment of these criteria is required.
