Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Rocky Mountain CESU: The purpose of the Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center (NoRock) funding opportunity is to conduct research on soil microbial data and to conduct a pilot near-surface sensing project in the Powder River Basin and on the Pinedale Anticline, respectively. We will analyze spatial vegetation data (composition and structure) from both study areas. We will also maintain and conduct quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) on our databases; conduct laboratory analyses of soil samples (physical, chemical and biological); and field check model results as necessary. Management of native and non-native plant species and biological soil components, particularly as habitat in the face of climate change and rapid energy development, requires spatial and temporal understanding of the interactions between biological and physical stream components and landuse. The focal study areas provide a unique opportunity to benefit from existing databases and previous development of analysis approaches to shape collection of new data and subsequent novel analyses (e.g., relating vegetation and soils data to near-surface and remotely-sensed data related to productivity and subsequent animal movement and use). This effort will enhance the access to available data and improve capabilities for synthesis, research, outreach, and effective response to resource management questions by encouraging interagency data sharing, communication of research results and facilitation of practical applications for land managers and the public. NOROCK conducts research in support of natural resources management in the mountains and plains of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Idaho. The Center produces and disseminates scientific information needed for decision-making in collaboration with Federal and State land management agencies, Native American tribes, academic institutions and organizations. Since 2001, NOROCK has funded projects that advance the Center in producing strong and unbiased scientific information necessary for decision making. The Center will continue to support such projects.
