Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Rocky Mountain CESU: The US Geological Survey, Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center (NOROCK), is offering a funding opportunity to collect data and analyze data to assess how different sampling designs for quantifying salmon habitat influence understanding of habitat status. The first objective will be to collect continuous field data to quantify stream habitat quality and quantify using different sampling designs. The sampling designs should include a reach-based approach and a riverscape approach using a census of stream habitat. Data collection will be field based to estimate the amount of habitat and the habitat attributes critical to Pacific salmon (e.g., substrate). The continuous habitat data should then be used in simulation approaches to statistically quantify sampling efforts needed to accurately and precisely characterize stream habitat. Simulations will be conducted across habitat metrics and at different spatial scales including individual stream and basin.
