Critical Zone Observatories: This solicitation calls for proposals to develop Critical Zone Observatories that will operate at the watershed scale and that will significantly advance our understanding of the integration and coupling of Earth surface processes as mediated by the presence and flux of fresh water. Successful proposals will be motivated and implemented by both field and theoretical approaches, each providing the impetus for advances in the other, and they will include substantial and novel plans for education, outreach and broader impacts.
