Department of Defense (DOD) Fiscal Year 2005 (FY05) Prostate Cancer Health Disparity Training - Prostate Scholar Award (HDT): The intent of the Health Disparity Training Prostate Scholar Award is to provide investigators in the early stages of their careers opportunities for training focused on disparity in prostate cancer. Appropriate disparity focus areas can include, but are not limited to, race and ethnicity, socio-economic status, access to health care, insurance status, age, geography and/or cultural beliefs. These awards require the active involvement of a mentor who is an established prostate cancer researcher from an appropriate discipline (clinical research, pathology, urology, etc.) The mentor must have a demonstrated record of funding and publications in prostate cancer research. Under this award mechanism, investigators may apply for Predoctoral Traineeships, Postdoctoral Traineeships, or Postresidency Traineeships. Applicants must demonstrate a connection to, or effectiveness in working with, the affected population/community. Such connection(s) may include: ? Being a member of the affected population/community with a demonstrated commitment to the affected population/community; ? Having past or present experience working with affected population/community; and/or ? Having interactions with and/or active membership in organizations such as the Urban League, National Medical Association, National Alliance for Hispanic Health, American Indian Health Care Association, and National Rural Health Association. In addition, the proposal must explicitly state how the proposed research is related to a health disparity focus area in prostate cancer.
