Department of Defense (DOD) Fiscal Year 2006 (FY06) Neurofibromatosis Research Program (NFRP) Resource Development Award: The NFRP recognizes the critical need for improved resources to advance the fields of NF and Schwannomatosis research. Consequently, the Resource Development Award has been established to support product-driven research aimed at developing tools for use by the applicants laboratory and the NF/Schwannomatosis research community to promote basic research on those disorders. These tools may include, but are not limited to, animal models, antibodies, cell lines, assays, and reagents. Applicants must clearly articulate how the proposed resource addresses an unmet need in NF/Schwannomatosis research. As applicable, applicants should also explain the advantages of their approach to developing the resource over standard methodologies and techniques. Due to the developmental nature of this award, preliminary data are not required but may be included, if available, to address the feasibility of the resource to be developed. Whether or not preliminary data are included, proposals must apply solid scientific rationale and logical reasoning based on existing knowledge to the development of the proposed product. Please note that the Resource Development Award mechanism is designed to support the development of tools, platforms, and model systems to be used for basic research in NF and/or Schwannomatosis. Investigators interested in developing and/or validating tools, platforms, or model systems specifically for preclinical testing of therapeutics for NF/Schwannomatosis should instead apply for the NFRP FY06 Therapeutic Development Award. Included in the submission must be a plan describing the means by which the fully developed resource will be made available to the scientific community at reasonable or appropriate administrative costs, such as costs required for packaging and shipping the resource. The Government intends to advertise the resource developed through this award to the scientific community and to provide information on the CDMRP website as to how to acquire the resource. Projects involving human subjects or human biological substances will not be supported unless they are exempt under 32 CFR 219.101(b) or qualify for expedited review under 32 CFR 219.110 or 21 CFR 56.110. Studies that do not qualify for exempt status or expedited review will be administratively withdrawn and will not be funded.
