Department of Defense (DOD) Fiscal Year 2006 (FY06) Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP) Health Disparity Training - Prostate Scholar Award: The intent of the Health Disparity Training - Prostate Scholar Award is to provide training opportunities focused on prostate cancer disparity for investigators in the early stages of their careers. Appropriate disparity focus areas can include, but are not limited to, race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, access to health care, insurance status, age, geography, and cultural beliefs. These awards provide primarily salary support and require the active involvement of a mentor who is an established prostate cancer researcher from an appropriate discipline (clinical research, pathology, urology, etc.). The mentor must have a demonstrated record of funding and publications in prostate cancer research. Applicants may apply for Predoctoral, Postdoctoral, or Postresidency Traineeships through this award mechanism (see Section IV.A for eligibility requirements). The applicant or mentor must demonstrate a connection to, or effectiveness in working with, the affected population or community. Such connection(s) may include: Being a member of the affected population or community with a demonstrated commitment to the affected population or community; Having experience working with the affected population or community; and/or Having interactions with and/or active membership in organizations such as the Urban League, National Medical Association, National Alliance for Hispanic Health, American Indian Health Care Association, and National Rural Health Association. The proposal must explicitly state how the proposed research is related to a health disparity focus area in prostate cancer. Proposals also should emphasize: the trainees potential for and commitment to prostate cancer health disparity research; the mentors qualifications and experience in prostate cancer research and health disparity; and the strength of the training program in prostate cancer research at the trainees institution. Proposals must be written, with appropriate direction from the mentor, and signed by the trainee as the applicant and author. Applicants must describe the proposed research project, prostate cancer research training program, and their career goals in the body of the proposal (see Subsection V.K). The mentor is responsible for preparing certain components of the proposal (described in Subsection V.L.7). Proposals will not be evaluated and awards will not be made for "to be named" trainees. Funding for the Health Disparity Research - Prostate Scholar Award may be requested as follows (see Section IV.A for definitions of categories): Category Maximum Direct Funding Predoctoral Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. Applicants $92,000 Postdoctoral Ph.D. and M.D. Applicants $172,500 Postresidency Applicants $276,000 Funds can be requested for a performance period of up to 3 years. Although animal and human research may be proposed, such research will not be funded by these awards. These funds may be not be used for supplies or equipment.
