Developing Strategies in Central America and Panama Region to Strengthen the Response to the HIV Epidemic Under the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR): The purpose of this program is to strengthen the HIV and Tuberculosis surveillance and control, currently the primary cause of morbidity and the second cause of mortality in infected patients with HIV worldwide. An uninfected person has a 10 % likelihood of acquiring tuberculosis during their lifetime while HIV-positive people have a 10% risk per year. In Central America HIV prevalence among TB patients varies from 12% in El Salvador to 20% in Central America and Panama Region.
