Discovery of Novel Epigenetic Marks in Mammalian Cells (R01): The National Institutes of Health invites applications that propose to establish and validate novel pathways of stable, differential silencing and activation of gene expression in mammalian cells. A companion announcement using the R21 mechanism (RFA-RM-07-016), is focused on discovery of potential epigenetic marks in mammalian or non-mammalian model systems. In the long term, advances in these areas will enhance our ability to investigate, diagnose and ameliorate human disease with a significant epigenetic component. The R01 Research Project Grant mechanism will be used for this FOA, which runs in parallel with RFA-RM-07-016 that solicits applications using the R21 mechanism. These R01s may propose a MAXIMUM of three years of support. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. A total of $3.5 million for each of 3 years, to support both this FOA and RFA-RM-07-016, has been committed, beginning in FY2008. The anticipated number of awards under this FOA is 4-6.
