Genetic Epidemiology of Substance Use Disorders (R03): -Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits small research projects to expand the application of genetic epidemiologic methods to studies of substance and alcohol use disorders (SUDs/AUD, drug and alcohol abuse and dependence) by applying genetic epidemiologic approaches to advance our understanding of developmental trajectories of SUD/AUD, differentiate genetic and environmental factors in the development and maintenance of SUD/AUD, broaden and refine phenotypic definitions of SUDs/AUD, guide the translation of etiologic findings to treatment, prevention, gene-finding and molecular studies, and meet the methodologic challenges of the field. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Small Research Grant (R03) award mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, PA -07-413, that solicits applications under the R01 mechanism, and PA -07-415, that solicits applications under the R21 mechanism. -The R03 grant mechanism supports different types of projects including pilot and feasibility studies; secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology; and development of new research technology.
