Human Pancreatic Islet Cell Resources (ICRs): - Purpose: This Request for Applications seeks to identify and provide financial support to organizations to continue the Islet Cell Resource Center (ICR) program. These centers would be responsible for the procurement of whole pancreata, isolation and quality control of islet cell preparations, and distribution of islets for both approved laboratory research and clinical protocols. They would also perform research and development to improve isolation techniques, cellular viability and function, and shipping procedures; develop and implement methods that standardize assessment of islet mass, composition, quality, viability and other characteristics that are predictive of successful transplantation and clinical efficacy throughout the Nation. - Funds available: NCRR and the Special Statutory Funding Program for Type 1 Diabetes Research, administered by NIDDK, will provide up to $8 million per year. - Number and duration of awards: Six to eight awards will be made for 3-year periods with the possibility of extending the duration to 5-year periods should sufficient funds become available. - Mechanism of support: The U42 (Cooperative Agreement) mechanism will be used. - Eligible organizations: Applications for the ICR portion of this RFA may be submitted by domestic not-for-profit organizations, public and private organizations, such as universities, colleges, hospitals, laboratories, units of state and local governments, and eligible agencies of the Federal government. Foreign institutions are not eligible to receive awards under this solicitation. However, under exceptional circumstances, a foreign component critical to an ICR may be included as a part of the program. - Eligible principal investigators: Individuals with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to plan, organize, and administer an ICR are eligible principal investigators. Members of racial and/or ethnic minority groups, women, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply as principal investigators. An individual may be a principal investigator on only one application. - Number of applications each institution may submit: An institution may be party to multiple applications for any ICR, although it may be the applicant institution on only one application. - Application materials: See Section IV.1. - Telecommunications for the hearing impaired: Available at TTY 301-451-0088.
