Identify Age-Structure of California Least Tern: The purpose of this funding is to identify the age-structure of a subsample of the California least tern (Sternula antillarum browni) population in California through recapturing (sampling) birds that have been banded previously though 10(a)(1)(A) permits. The Recipient shall manage and conduct population sampling at sites that have supported relatively high numbers of breeding pairs and where chicks have been regularly banded in recent years. These sites may include Venice Beach, Los Angeles Harbor, Huntington Beach, Camp Pendleton (Santa Margarita River), Batiquitos Lagoon (W-2 and E-1), Delta Beach North, NAB Ocean, Alameda Point, and Point Mugu Ormond Beach East. The Recipient must be permitted through a 10(a)(1)(A) permit (along with several existing subpermittees) to handle adult California least terns. The Recipient will collectively survey/capture 350 banded California least tern adults (approximately 5 percent of the 2007 adult California least tern population) for band-reading. California least tern band data will be submitted to the U.S. Geological Service (USGS) Patuxent Banding Lab to retrieve sampled birds past banding data. The data will be used to compile the number of California least tern of each age class and subsequently reported to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Completion of this project is subject to availability of funds.
