Innovations in Cancer Sample Preparation (R33): -This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits exploratory grant applications for research projects proposing the development and significant enhancement or adaptation of sample preparation methodologies and technologies, the development of assays to assess sample quality, and studies designed to elucidate the criteria by which to judge sample quality. The outcome will be products and methods designed to optimize sample utility. -This funding opportunity is part of a broader NCI-sponsored Innovative Molecular Analysis Technologies (IMAT) Program. Several IMAT FOAs of identical or closely related scientific scope using various funding mechanisms are available. To facilitate selection, a separate Notice provides brief cross-comparison and links to all the IMAT FOAs (NOT-CA-06-025). -This FOA will utilize the Developmental Grants (R33) grant mechanism and runs in parallel with four other FOAs of identical scientific scope and nine closely related FOAs that solicit applications under various mechanisms (NOT-CA-06-025). -Contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications to this FOA and parallel FOAs of identical scientific scope that use alternative funding mechanisms, the NCI intends to commit a total of up to $500,000 to this RFA in FY 2007 to award up to 3 grants in response to this RFA. An applicant for an R33 grant may request a project period of up to 3 years with a budget appropriate for the science proposed. -Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received. -Eligible organizations: for-profit organizations; non-profit organizations; public or private institutions, such as universities, colleges, hospitals, and laboratories; units of State governments; units of local governments; eligible institutions of the Federal government; domestic institutions; foreign institutions; faith-based or community-based organizations; Indian/Native American Tribal Government (Federally Recognized); Indian/Native American Tribal Government (Other than Federally Recognized); and Indian/Native American Tribally Designated Organization. -Eligible Project Directors/Principal Investigators (PD/PIs) include any individual with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research; such persons are invited to work with their institutions to develop applications for support. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are always encouraged to apply for NIH support. -Applicants may submit more than one application, provided each application is scientifically distinct. Once funded as a PD/PI via this FOA, an individual is then ineligible to submit another application as a PD/PI for this FOA.
