Innovative Approaches for the Identification of Mitochondria-Cell Signaling Networks in Response to Environmental Stress: This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) supports the development of technologies and experimental models to more precisely track signaling between the mitochondria and other cellular processes under environmental stress conditions, including mitochondrial-nuclear signaling with respect to epigenetic regulation, DNA damage response, or response to oxidative stress. This FOA uses the R21/R33 Phased Innovation Award mechanism to develop new technologies and experimental models to elucidate mitochondrial-cell signaling. Technologies developed in the R21 phase may include more sensitive reagents for detection of specific reactive oxygen or nitrogen species, enhanced approaches for metabolic flux analysis, and expanded in vitro or experimental models for identifying alterations in signaling pathways in response to environmental stressors. Successful completion of milestones outlined in the R21 phase will enable investigators to be considered for the R33 phase to conduct additional pilot testing and validation of these technologies using environmental stressors to probe bidirectional communication resulting in either altered cellular programming or mitochondrial function or both.
