Mechanisms, Diagnosis and Treatment of Radiation Injury from a Nuclear Accident or Terrorist Attack (R01): Purpose. To support research on: 1) establishment of mechanisms of radiation damage to cells and tissues; 2) identification of radiation exposure-specific biomarkers; 3) development of biodosimetry methods and devices for triage of large populations in the wake of a nuclear or radiological event; and/or 4) development of medical countermeasures to mitigate and/or treat radiation injury. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. NIAID intends to commit approximately $4 million in Fiscal Year 2008 to fund 8-12 awards. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. Annual direct costs are limited to $250,000 per grant. Eligible Institutions/Organizations.
