Mechanisms of Nervous System Dysfunction: Impact of Alcohol Abuse on HIV-1 Neuropathogenesis (R01): -Purpose. This funding opportunity is intended to support research to determine the interactions and impact of alcohol abuse and addiction on the biological mechanisms underlying HIV-produced neuronal dysfunction and damage that lead to the development and progression of central and peripheral nervous system disorders and complications due to HIV-1 infection. Proposals to study the effects of alcohol abuse and addiction on viral replication, viral entry into the nervous system, or viral-mediated neuroinflammation will not be considered responsive. Applicants proposing research studies that are outside the intent of this funding opportunity may consider responding to PA-07-089; HIV Infection of the Central Nervous System (R01). -Mechanism of Support.
