Mechanisms of Nervous System Dysfunction: Impact of Alcohol Abuse on HIV-1 Neuropathogenesis (R21): -Purpose. This funding opportunity is intended to support research to determine the interactions and impact of alcohol abuse and addiction on the biological mechanisms underlying HIV-produced neuronal dysfunction and damage that lead to the development and progression of central and peripheral nervous system disorders and complications due to HIV-1 infection. Proposals to study the effects of alcohol abuse and addiction on viral replication, viral entry into the nervous system, or viral-mediated neuroinflammation will not be considered responsive. Applicants proposing research studies that are outside the intent of this funding opportunity may consider responding to PA-07-089; HIV Infection of the Central Nervous System (R01). -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant mechanism, and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, RFA-AA-07-015, that solicits applications under the Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. It is anticipated that approximately $1,500,000 will be available to support applications responsive to this announcement and to the parallel announcement (above). As such, NIAAA anticipates supporting 5 to 6 R21 awards, and 2 to 3 R01 awards, under this and the parallel announcement, respectively. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
