Microbicide Innovation Program (MIP II) (R21/R33): -The Microbicide Innovation Program (MIP II) solicits research in the field of topical microbicides using the NIH Phased Innovation Award (R21/R33). -The R21/R33 phased innovation award will support the innovative exploratory and developmental research initiated through a milestone-driven process under the R21 phase to establish the feasibility of new microbicides, microbicide strategies and support technologies, and through the R33 phase provide the support required to translate the innovation discoveries into the preclinical/ clinical development pipeline. -Budget and Project Period: The total project period for an application submitted in response to this funding opportunity may not exceed 5 years. Foreign institutions are not eligible to apply. Eligible agencies of the Federal Government can apply. Faith-based or community-based organizations can apply. Applicants may submit more than one application, provided each application is scientifically distinct. Clinical trials (defined as Phase I, II or III) or first-time-in human studies will not be supported under this announcement. Clinical research, that uses clinical specimens or uses collection of behavioral or social data and/or phase 0 studies as defined by the FDA http://www.fda.gov/cder/guidance/7086fnl.htm, may be supported under this announcement. Applicants are strongly urged to discuss any proposal containing clinical elements with Program prior to submission. When clinical studies or trials are a component of the research proposed, NIAID policy requires that studies be monitored commensurate with the degree of potential risk to study subjects and the complexity of the study.
