NEI Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Research Training Grants (T32) for Statistical Genetics and Genome Informatics: Purpose. The NEI Institutional Research Training Grants (T32) for Statistical Genetics and Genome Informatics is a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award program that is intended to support predoctoral and postdoctoral training at institutions having the potential to develop meritorious training programs in genomic medicine, computational genomics, and statistical genetics. The goal of this program is to initiate a training program to develop ophthalmic statistical genetics and bioinformatics research skills critical for investigators seeking to identify genes and genetic variations underlying ocular diseases. This training program is designed to attract individuals in early career stages, in order to increase their knowledge and awareness of research in the genetics of ophthalmic disorders, and to encourage them to pursue research career opportunities in these scientific fields. Such training will help meet a growing need for investigators trained in computational genomics related to basic biomedical, clinical, and translational ophthalmic research. The NEI plans a long-term commitment to this area. Trainee appointments will be determined by the institution and conducted in a manner that will include the recruitment of individuals from diverse backgrounds. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Research Training Grant (T32) mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research training will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. Although the financial plans of the NEI anticipate funding four applications, awards pursuant to this funding opportunity are contingent upon the availability of funds and the receipt of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
