Notice of Intent: Stabilize Cavalry Barracks and First Fort Ruins (PMIS 199345)/Stabilize Four Ruins at the Fort (PMIS 188829): A. This project will remove and replace the lime plaster shelter coats used to protect the adobe walls of the ruins of Fort Bowie. The focus of the project will be training student participants (and others) in the concepts of historic preservation and will provide hands-on experience in selecting appropriate soils, mixing earthen mortar, repairing damaged adobe walls, and mixing and applying lime plaster.

Over the course of the project we expect to remove 100% of the existing lime plaster shelter coats and install new shelter coats. This represents approximately 1,000 linear feet of adobe wall standing from 1 to 12 feet high (approximately 12,000 square feet of adobe wall surface). Repairs to the walls will be made as underlying damage is revealed, and trial applications of alternative surface treatments will be tested.

The information created during the course of this project will be shared on the Integration of Resource Management Applications datastore (IRMA) as well as on the park website. This information will increase public awareness, knowledge and support for historic preservation projects in the area. Additionally, students will gain real world experience with historic preservation planning and implementation. Finally, the project will improve the condition and appearance of adobe resources at the park, therefore improving interpretation and visitor appreciation.
