This Single Source Award is being made in accordance with Department of the Interior Policy 505 DM 2.14 B(4), which allows for award without competition to an applicant who is uniquely qualified to perform the activity based on technical expertise. The Principal Investigator for the project, Dr. Tamara Ticktin of the Botany Department of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa is uniquely qualified to perform the work on this project and is selected based several attributes. Dr. Ticktin has developed a specialized research capacity that integrates both the biological and social sciences, and is well-published on the application of traditional ecological knowledge on conservation practices. Key native Hawaiian residents of the focal land area on Hawai'i island (Ka'upulehu) helped to create the study plan and have agreed to participate in the project due to the involvement of Dr. Ticktin.
