Opportunity PAR-10-271: Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) invites submission of investigator-initiated Program Project (P01) applications.The proposed programs may address scientific areas relevant to the NIAID mission including the biology, pathogenesis, and host response to microbes, including HIV; the mechanisms of normal immune function and immune dysfunction resulting in autoimmunity, immunodeficiency, allergy, asthma, and transplant rejection; and translational research to develop vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics to prevent and treat infectious, immune-mediated, and allergic diseases. Each P01 application submitted in response to this FOA must include at least two related research projects that share a common central theme, focus, and/or overall objective.Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Program Project (P01) grant mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards.The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received. Budget and Project Period. Applicants may request support for up to 5 years. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. Application Research Strategy Length: The Research Strategy sections of the Overall Program and of each individual Research Project may not exceed 12 pages, and the Core Services Strategy sectionfor the individual Cores may not exceed 6 pages, including tables, graphs, figures, diagrams, and charts.SeeTable of Page Limits.
