Probiotics for Pediatric Illnesses (R21): -The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to provide support for pilot research on mechanism(s) of action, safety and efficacy of probiotics, as well as for more robust intervention studies for the prevention and treatment of pediatric illnesses for which more convincing preliminary data are available. -Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanisms, numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.-This funding opportunity will utilize the NCCAM R21 (Exploratory/Developmental Project) mechanism, but will be run in parallel with a program announcement of identical scientific scope (PA-05-035) that will utilize the traditional research project grant (R01).-Eligible organizations: For-profit organizations; non-profit organizations; public or private institutions; units of State; units of local governments; eligible agencies of the Federal government; foreign institutions; domestic institutions; faith-based or community-based organizations; units of State Tribal government; and units of Local Tribal government. -Eligible Project Directors/Principal Investigators (PD/PIs): Any individual with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research.
