Program Projects for Basic Research on Human Embryonic Stem Cells (P01): The goal of the proposed Program Project (P01) grants is to support research on the basic biology of human embryonic stem cells (hESC) and to promote the use of hESC as a model system to address significant questions in the basic biomedical sciences. The P01 should include a minimum of three R01-like subprojects to study the unique characteristics of hESC and/or to use hESC as a model system to address a basic biological question. The P01 should include a core to grow, maintain, and further characterize approved hESC lines listed on the NIH Human Embryonic Stem Cell Registry, http://stemcells.nih.gov/research/registry/. In addition, the core should serve as a resource to train investigators at the grantee institution to work with and use hESC in pilot experiments. The core may also support research on improved growth and culture conditions of hESC; compare the characteristics of hESC lines; develop reagents and tools to enhance the use of hESC as an experimental model system. The maximum total amount to be awarded for each application is $6.1 million, direct costs, for five years. It is anticipated that up to four awards will be made.
