Radionuclide Decorporation Agents for Radiation/Nuclear Emergencies: Project BioShield (R01): This is a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) to accelerate the development of safe and effective products to remove radionuclides from the body (decorporation) following nuclear contamination from any source. Specifically, candidate products will demonstrate an increase in efficiency and rate of radionuclide elimination from the body after contamination due to ingestion, inhalation or transdermal absorption.-In FY 2006, the NIAID intends to commit up to $4 million to support research projects focused on the development of novel radionuclide chelation and decorporation agents. -Support will be provided for up to $1 million in total costs per award for a project period not to exceed eighteen (18) months. -It is anticipated that 4-6 awards will be made in 2006. -This FOA will use the R01 funding mechanism. -Eligible organizations: For-profit organizations; Non-profit organizations; Public or private institutions, such as universities, colleges, hospitals, and laboratories; Units of State government; Units of local government; Eligible agencies of the Federal government; Domestic Institutions (Foreign institutions/organization may apply as a subcontractor to a qualifying U.S. domestic institution/organization).-Eligible principal investigators include experienced scientists with leadership and administrative skills commensurate with those required to lead an R01 or similar award mechanism. -Applicants may not submit more than one application in response to this FOA. -See Section IV.1 for application materials. -Send applications directly to NIAID not to CSR per instructions.-Special Review by NIAID per BioShield Act 2004-Telecommunications for the hearing impaired is available at: TTY 301-451-0088
