Repair and Retrofit of Holton Pond, NAS Patuxent River, MD: Holton Pond is located at the intersection of Shaw Road and Tate Road on Naval Air Station Patuxent River (PAXR). It was built during the 1960's and is fed by Sewall and Calvert Ponds. Currently Holton Pond is used primarily for recreational fishing at PAXR. Unfortunately, due to the age of Holton Pond, the original storm drainage pipes are in danger of failing. Failure of these pipes will result in stream flooding, possible sediment release containing harmful residue and potential loss of road access into parts of the Installation. The earthen dam creating Holton Pond is leaking and must be replaced. The sediment dam and the corresponding storm drainage pipes need to be retrofitted before the Pond can be refilled. Holton Pond also needs an additional water level control structure to be considered compliant with Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) requirements. In 2000, Southern Maryland Resource Conservation and Development Area was contracted to provide the necessary technical studies, design plans and acquire the permits necessary to complete this effort. The original designs were completed in 2006 and submitted to MDE for permitting in 2006. After numerous rounds of consultation with both MDE and the Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE), and the permit was granted on March 26, 2009 allowing this project to move forward. This work will be accomplished per the Navy approved permitted plans currently held at PAXR. The construction will include retrofits for the earthen dam and existing storm drainage pipes as well as construction of a water level control device.
