Research Into the Public Health Aspects of West Nile Virus: CDC?s Procurement and Grants Office has published a program announcement entitled, ?Research into the Public Health Aspects of West Nile Virus?. Approximately $2,500,000 will be available in fiscal year 2004 to fund ten to fifteen awards. The human and animal epidemics caused by West Nile virus (WNV), which began in the northeastern United States in the summer and fall of 1999 and has since spread from coast-to-coast, underscores the ease with which emerging infectious pathogens can be introduced into new areas. The persistence of virus activity in the United States over the past five years indicates that WNV has become established in North America. The purpose of the program is to solicit research proposals in a variety of areas to gain better knowledge of the public health impact and basic biology of WNV in the United States. The application deadline is June 18, 2004, and the estimated funding date is September 1, 2004.
