Research on Research Integrity (R03): Purpose. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) solicits Small (R03) grant applications from applicant organizations that propose exploratory research on research integrity. The purpose of using the R03 Small Grant mechanism is to encourage studies of limited scope that use widely accepted approaches and methods within established disciplines. By using this mechanism, the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) expects to foster research in areas of study having limited published data to identify clear evidence of problem areas that would benefit from further investigation. Applications must address at least one of the following areas that are of particular interest to the ORI and NIH: the clarification of community norms and standards, the effectiveness of self-regulation, the societal, organizational, group, or individual factors that affect integrity in research, both positively and negatively, or the impacts of non-adherence to accepted codes of conduct. Proposals must have clear relevance to biomedical, behavioral health sciences, or health services research. Applicants are encouraged take into consideration problems or issues that have relevance to the specific interests of ORI or NIH Institutes and Centers. Mechanism of Support. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will utilize the NIH Research Project (R03) grant mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, RFA-RR-07-003, that solicits applications under the Exploratory/Developmental (R21) mechanism.. As the applicant(s), you will be responsible for planning, directing, and executing the proposed project. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Funding for FY2008 is anticipated to be between $300,000 and $400,000 in total costs to support two to three new meritorious R03 awards. Any individual with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research may request up to $100,000 in direct costs for the two year project period. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. Budget and Project Period. The total project period for an application submitted in response to this funding opportunity may not exceed two years. Direct costs are limited to $100,000 over an R03 two-year period, with no more than $50,000 in direct costs allowed in any single year Eligible Institutions/Organizations. Eligible Project Directors/Principal Investigators (PDs/PIs): Individuals with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research are invited to work with their institution to develop an application for support. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are always encouraged to apply for NIH support. Number of Applications. Applicants may submit more than one application, provided each application is scientifically distinct. Application Materials. See Section IV.1 for application materials. Renewals and Resubmissions. Competing renewal (formerly competing continuation ) applications will not be accepted for the R03 mechanism. Up to two resubmissions (formerly revisions/amendments ) or a previously reviewed small grant application may be submitted. Number of PDs/PIs. More than one PD/PI, or multiple PDs/PIs, may be designated on the application.
