Tumor Stem Cells in Cancer Biology, Prevention, and Therapy (R01): -Purpose The objective of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to stimulate research in the area of tumor stem cell biology including characterization of tumor stem cell markers, and to identify of specific genetic and functional signatures of tumor stem cells. The goal is the translation of basic research findings into clinical practice in the context of both hematological and solid tumor malignancies. Therefore, applications submitted in response to this FOA must involve appropriate and substantive collaborative arrangements between basic and translational researchers providing, respectively, expertise in the biology of tumor stem cells and in translation of basic research findings into clinical practice. To facilitate substantive collaborations, applicants are encouraged to take advantage of the multiple Principal Investigators option. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH research project R01 grant mechanism. Another FOA of identical scientific scope but using the NIH Program Project (P01) mechanism will be released in the near future as RFA-CA-08-020. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. A total of approximately $2.7M annually is available over 5 years. The NCI expects to fund an estimated five to six awards.
