Grants to Preserve and Create Access to Humanities Collections: Awards are made for projects to preserve and create intellectual access to humanities collections, which, because of their intellectual content and value as cultural artifacts, are considered highly important for research, education, and public programming. Humanities collections may include, but are not limited to, books, journals, newspapers, manuscript and archival materials, maps, still and moving images, sound recordings, and objects of art and material culture. When projects focus on a coherent subject-based collection that contains various formats of materials, applicants may request support for preservation and access activities that would be appropriate to their nature, condition, and eventual use. Eligible activities include: * processing archival and manuscript collections; * cataloging printed works, photographs, recorded sound, and moving image collections; * documentation of art and material culture collections; * preservation reformatting (including brittle books and serials microfilming projects), conservation treatment, and deacidification of collections; * digitization of collections to enhance their accessibility; * development of archival oral histories; and * cataloging and microfilming of United States newspapers. Through its United States Newspaper Program (USNP), NEH supports the cataloging and preservation microfilming of newspapers published in this country since the eighteenth century. Projects are conducted on a state-by-state basis. NEH does not support the preservation or cataloging of United States newspapers outside the purview of a statewide USNP project. Applicants should consult NEH staff before preparing an application that focuses on U.S. newspapers. Please note: USNP proposals have a July 1 deadline. Applicants seeking support for projects that focus primarily on purchasing storage furniture and rehousing collections, improving environmental conditions (including the installation of climate control systems), and installing security, lighting, and fire-prevention systems should apply for a Stabilization of Humanities Collections Grant.
