Instructions for Preparing a Directed Source Award Application Fiscal Year 2010: Health information exchanges (HIEs) are becoming important sources of health data for public health agencies. HIEs can aggregate data in real time from multiple sources and transform it to meet public health requirements. HIEs can also provide far more complex and comprehensive data sets than public health agencies have received in the past. While this new source of data presents unprecedented opportunities for the public health system, public health agencies currently have very limited capabilities for analyzing and utilizing this data. New tools are needed that can support routine analysis and visualization of large, complex health data sets and that leverage such data sets for use in public health surveillance and investigation activities.
