Outcomes in Children with Mild to Severe Hearing Loss (R01): Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) solicits longitudinal research applications from institutions/organizations to investigate outcomes in young children with mild to severe hearing loss. Applications must be multidisciplinary and have a primary focus on determining the impact of intervention, child, and family factors on communicative, educational and social development outcomes in young children with mild to severe hearing loss. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NIDCD and AHRQ intend to commit up to a total of $2.0 million in FY2008 to support 1-2 meritorious projects that are responsive to this FOA. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the quality, duration, and costs of the applications received. Eligible Institutions/Organizations. Public/State Controlled Institution of Higher Education; Private Institution of Higher Education; Nonprofit with 501(c)(3) IRS Status (Other than Institution of Higher Education); Nonprofit without 501(c)(3) IRS Status (Other than Institution of Higher Education); Small Business; For-Profit Organization (Other than Small Business); and State Governments. Eligible Project Directors/Principal Investigators (PDs/PIs). Individuals with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research are invited to work with their institution/organization to develop an application for support. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are always encouraged to apply for NIH support. Number of Applications. Applicants may submit more than one application, provided each application is scientifically distinct. Renewals and Resubmissions. At this time, it is not known if this FOA will be reissued. Since the FOA requests longitudinal projects, it is anticipated that at the end of this project period, investigator-initiated competing renewals (formerly competing continuation ) will be encouraged. Number of PDs/PIs. More than one PD/PI, or multiple PDs/PIs, may be designated on the application.
