Reinvigorating HIV Prevention for Men who have Sex with Men (R21): Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), encourages research applications to develop and test new HIV prevention interventions, which, if implemented to scale, would help to curb the spread of HIV infection, reduce HIV-associated morbidity and mortality, and reduce health disparities in HIV rates among the most at-risk men who have sex with men (MSM). Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Exploratory/Developmental Grant (R21) award mechanism and runs in parallel with the following FOAs of essentially identical scientific scope: RFA-MH-11-080, which seeks applications under the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism and RFA-MH-11-082, which seeks applications under the NIMH Clinical Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant (R34) award mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NIMH intends to commit approximately $2,000,000 in FY 2011 to fund 4-6 awards in response to this FOA and the companion announcements.
