USAID/DCHA/OFDA Annual Program Statement (APS) for FY-2005 Initiative in Burundi Linking Food Security and Nutrition: USAID/DCHA/OFDA?s mandate is to save lives, alleviate human suffering, and reduce the economic impact of disasters. In order to achieve this goal, USAID/DCHA/OFDA?s strategy in Burundi in FY-2005 will be to continue emergency, multi-sectoral activities in affected areas, including areas receiving the return of displaced populations. USAID/DCHA/OFDA is soliciting applications to reinvigorate the emergency nutrition response, targeting programs that provide critical emergency nutritional interventions that also respond to complex food insecurity in Burundi. Programs may further existing programs and/or may be new efforts. Objectives ? Provide emergency, life-saving assistance to those populations most at risk from malnutrition and complex food insecurity. ? Increase the capacity of households to better resist and rebound from future shocks and to build resiliency to factors causing food insecurity, reducing the likelihood of needing emergency interventions in the future. ? Assist populations in promoting self-sufficiency and minimizing demands for external assistance. ? Where possible, increase the preparedness of affected communities in Burundi to transition from widespread emergency nutrition and food security interventions to longer-term development initiatives.
