- Applicants in Category 1 are limited to tribal and non-tribal non-profit (Internal Revenue Code (I.R.C.) § 501(c)(3)) entities that provide legal assistance services for federally recognized Indian tribes, members of federally recognized Indian tribes, or tribal justice systems pursuant to federal poverty guidelines. - Authorized by 25 USC 3651, et seq., BJA's Tribal Civil and Criminal Legal Assistance (TCCLA) grants enhance tribal justice systems and improve access to those systems. Targeted to non-profit organizations, the grants serve to strengthen and improve the representation of indigent defendants in criminal cases and indigent respondents in civil causes of action under the jurisdiction of Indian tribes.
