Longleaf Pine Restoration Plan: This project will outline desired conditions for longleaf pine-dominated communities within the Big Thicket National Preserve and provide a detailed strategy for achieving desired conditions through restoration actions, long-term management, and continued monitoring. The final document (Restoration Plan) will also detail the history and ecology of longleaf pine and longleaf pine-dominated communities in the Big Thicket region. The project will be conducted as a partnership between Sam Houston State University faculty in the Department of Biology, SHSU graduate students and DESCO Environmental Services Co. coordinated through the curatorial staff of the Sam Houston State Natural History Collections. The overall goal of the project is to develop a strategy to restore historic conditions in longleaf pine communities at the Big Thicket National Preserve and create a guiding document that will provide direction for long-term management of longleaf pine communities on the preserve.
