YOU MUST READ THEFUNDING OPPORTUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT (BELOW) FOR DETAILS ON ADDITIONALINFORMATION,EVALUATION CRITERIA, AND HOW TO PREPARE YOUR APPLICATION.The objective of this Department of Energy (DOE), National EnergyTechnologyLaboratory (NETL) funding opportunity announcement is to select projects inFY05 that will support ongoing efforts to increase the understanding of therole of methane hydrates in the environment and the potential of methanehydrates as a future energy resource. The desire is to add projects to thecurrent portfolio that will result in improved tools, methods, andinformationrelative to the regional appraisal, detection, and characterization ofmethanehydrates, as well as field and lab studies on the role of hydrates withintheglobal environment. The objective of this funding opportunity is to receive applications forcost-shared research projects that will develop new methane hydrateexploration/production tools and technologies, and that will provide abetterunderstanding of hydrates in the natural environment.Specifically, the DOE wishes to support efforts to improve the tools andtechnologies needed to appraise the distribution, nature, concentration andproduction potential of hydrate deposits. This ability to high-grade thevastregions known to host hydrates into areas of particularly high abundance orconcentration will be a key step in advancing the understanding of hydrateoccurrence and the prospects for energy production from hydrate. In parallel with attempts to enable widespread methane extraction fromhydrates, the DOE also wishes to understand better the nature andoccurrence ofhydrates, and the geological and hydrological systems that produce hydratedeposits. In particular, the DOE is interested in supporting studies andthedevelopment of numerical models that will advance our understanding ofhydrate?s dynamic role in the natural environment, including its interaction withthedeep sea floor, the oceans and the atmosphere, including connections tobothpast and future global climate change.
