National Alzheimer's Call Center: Social and demographic trends are making information and assistance increasingly important to the average American family. There are approximately 45 million older Americans 60 years of age and older, with persons 85 years of age and older among the fastest growing segments in the country. Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects as many as 4 million Americans. Most people diagnosed with AD are over 65, however, it is possible for the disease to occur in people in their 40's and 50's. Recent research has shown links between some genes and AD but in about 90% of cases there is no clear genetic link. The majority of the elderly population with AD and related dementia need some help with their daily activities. Most of the people with AD receive care at home from family and friends. Caring for people with dementia is a time-consuming and demanding responsibility. Every day families are making tremendous sacrifices to provide care and support needed by their older relatives. Almost always, the provision of care is willingly provided and motivated by love, respect and concern. This care, however, is provided at a significant cost to the caregiver, not only in financial terms but also in increased emotional stress and health risks. Research has created promising new approaches for working with persons with AD and their caregivers. Experience has taught families and caregivers new behavioral approaches that encourage greater independence and reduce disturbing behavior. Through the work of the 38 state grantees in the Alzheimer's Disease Demonstration Grants to States (ADDGS) program now funded by the Administration on Aging (AoA), new dementia-specific approaches to early identification, treatment, and community-based care have been developed. These projects have been especially successful in working with low-income, ethnic minority and rural families.
