- Grant Description
- The goal of this project is to advance a proven thermal desalination technology by efficiently leveraging an underutilized alternative energy resource, low pressure steam from existing geothermal power plants, to provide potable water to areas seeking additional water supply. A demonstration of this technology has the potential to provide environmental benefits by removing environmental contaminants from surface waters and injecting them into geothermal wells along with the brine concentrate from the process. Not only will this remove environmental contaminants while new water supplies are produced, but the recharged brine will help to replenish the geothermal capacity of the aquifer. The Western United States is undergoing rapid population growth in a highly arid environment, increasing the demand on existing water supplies. While conservation measures can be effective in reducing demand or moderating its increase, new water supplies must still be pursued. In addition to encouraging local water conservation and recycling programs, Reclamation works closely with state and local entities, Indian tribes, water and power constituents, environmental groups, and other Federal agencies in order to meet future water needs. The VTE Demonstration Project is consistent with Reclamations interest in enhancement and improvement of water supplies in the West. A successful demonstration will provide Reclamation and others a technological base for providing potable water from impaired water resources in California and the western United States.
