Bodie Hills -Mono Lake Basin Conservation Action Planning: Recent western fires have shown that the alteration of historical fire regimes can have dire human and ecological costs. Although much media attention has been devoted to the human cost of fires in the wildland-urban interface, the ecological costs of wildland fires burning fuels in amounts and composition outside the historic range of variability has been as devastating to the ecological integrity of landscapes. Altered landscapes and fuels accumulation have the potential to detrimentally impact many native species and ecological systems if wildfire spreads to areas in Fire Regime Condition Class (FRCC) classes 2 and 3 (1 = within the historic range of variability; 2 = moderately departed from historic condition and likely to cause moderate loss of ecosystem integrity; 3 = highly departed from historic condition and highly likely to cause loss of ecosystem integrity). In addition, important cultural resources and property values can be threatened by altered landscapes and fuel build-up.
