Grant Description: The purpose of the WQPP is to recommend priority corrective actions and compliance schedules addressing point and nonpoint sources of pollution to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Sanctuary. This includes restoration and maintenance of a balanced, indigenous population of corals, shellfish, fish and wildlife, and recreational activities in and on the water. In addition, the Act requires the development of a comprehensive water quality monitoring program. EPA and the State of Florida have primary responsibility for implementing the comprehensive monitoring and special studies programs for the Sanctuary. EPA has provided the majority of funding for the monitoring activities and the special studies projects with assistance from NOAA, South Florida Water Management District, Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), Monroe County, and private environmental groups. This announcement concerns the monitoring and data management components of the WQPP that have been incorporated into the FKNMS's Science Plan.
