Grant Description
American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius is a major initiative to acquaint Americans with the best of their cultural and artistic legacy. Through American Masterpieces, the National Endowment for the Arts will sponsor performances, exhibitions, tours, and educational programs across all art forms that will reach large and small communities in all 50 states. This component of American Masterpieces will celebrate the extraordinary and rich evolution of choral music in the United States. Through performances of significant American choral music with related educational activities in regional choral festivals, music of the highest quality -- that otherwise would not be available -- will be experienced by Americans in communities across the nation. Through American Masterpieces: Choral Music, the National Endowment for the Arts will provide grants to up to six organizations to host regional choral festivals that will highlight selected repertoire by American composers and include the participation of choral directors, composers, and other choruses. A regional choral festival should be two to three days in length and include: One or more performances by multiple participating choruses. Master classes by respected choral directors and featured composers. Composer(s)-in-residence. Workshops for choral directors on vocal techniques and American choral repertoire. A culminating mass performance of selected repertoire by all choruses and participants. Related educational, interpretive, and contextual components including run-out performances outside the central venue, discussions, seminars, program material, and cooperative learning projects with educational or community institutions. Educational material for children and youth must ensure the application of national, state, or local arts education standards.
