Included among these grantees are the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Guam, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau. Competition is limited to the entities listed above because they have the primary responsibility for carrying out the public health assurance functions required to achieve the desired outcomes and performance goals established by CDC.
