A Pilot Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Using Hydroacoustics to Count Adult Salmonid Escapement in Mill Creek, California: In response to an identified need for reliable escapement monitoring without handling the fish, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) requests submission of proposals for a pilot study to assess the feasibility of counting adult Chinook salmon escapement in Mill Creek, California using fixed-location hydroacoustic techniques. Sampling escapement in Mill Creek requires an ability to accurately count adult spring-run Chinook salmon and steelhead during the spring high flow season, in turbid waters and without handling the fish or potentially impeding upstream migration using weirs or traps. To meet these sampling conditions, hydroacoustic techniques have been chosen for evaluation. USFWS reviewed acoustic sites on Mill Creek. The hydroacoustic sampling sites reviewed were located between Ward Dam to just above Upper Dam. Hydroacoustic sampling at the three dams viewed (Ward Dam, Clough Dam, and the Upper Dam) would be very difficult due to the shallow depths encountered. Three potential sample sites were identified: 1) in a deep channel just above Upper Dam, 2) immediately above Clough Dam, and 3) immediately above Ward Dam.
