Adherence Studies in Adolescents with Chronic Kidney or Urologic Diseases (R01): Adherence to a prescribed treatment regimen, including medications, devices and behavioral recommendations, can significantly impact morbidity and mortality for patients with chronic diseases, including chronic kidney or urologic disease. When adherence to complex and seemingly rigid treatment regimens is poor, the results can be tragic. Adolescence is a particularly challenging time for adherence given the competing demands in an adolescents life, the unique developmental changes, and rapidly changing set of responsibilities as they transition to adulthood. There are few studies in pediatrics beyond the HIV literature that address non-adherence. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support research to improve adherence in adolescents with chronic kidney or urologic diseases. Therefore, this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications from new or established investigators to pursue research to better understand factors that influence adherence, develop appropriate measures of adherence, and test innovative strategies to enhance adherence in this vulnerable population.
