Biomedical Informatics Research Network Coordinating Center (U24): -Sharing data and data analysis tools across a research community adds tremendous value to the efforts of that community. Search engines like Google show the power of sharing text based data. While progress has been made, the infrastructure necessary to share and query data sets that have more than just textual biomedical data is still under development. Examples of such heterogeneous data sets include those that contain images, clinical data, or genomic/gene expression data. Two large NIH supported infrastructure projects to allow data and tool sharing are the caBIG program (https://cabig.nci.nih.gov/) and the Biomedical Informatics Research Network (BIRN, http://www.nbirn.net ). -The BIRN Coordinating Center (BIRN CC) serves the critical task of developing, deploying and maintaining key infrastructure components, including high bandwidth connectivity via Internet 2, grid-based security, file management and computational services, techniques to federate databases and shared visualization and analysis environments. General details about this infrastructure are available at http://www.nbirn.net . -The award to the current BIRN CC will expire on April 30, 2009. The goal of this RFA is to allow eligible organizations to compete for a continuation of the BIRN CC.
