Black Lung Clinics Program: The purpose of the Black Lung Clinics Program (BLCP)is to provide treatment and rehabilitation for Black Lung patients and others with occupationally related pulmonary diseases. In addition, individual grantee programs are expected to include case finding and outreach, preventive and health promotion services, education for patients and their families, and testing to determine eligibility for Department of Labor or State benefits. Although the number of active coal miners has decreased substantially because of mechanization, there has been an increase in the number of retired coal miners with the disease and in the number of pulmonary patients from other occupations. A current objective of the program is to expand outreach so that more of the eligible population is made aware of the services offered by the grantee clinics.
